Full Circle Farming

At Long Meadow Ranch, vineyards, olive groves, gardens and livestock are all part of one interconnected farming operation. The Hall family calls this approach Full Circle Farming: each part of the ranch complements the others and contributes to the health of the whole. Farm-grown ingredients supply the Farmstead kitchen, some surplus produce becomes animal feed, and organic material returns to the soil as compost.

One Farming Operation, Several Distinct Places

Ted, Laddie and Chris Hall apply this approach across the Long Meadow Ranch properties. The family’s original home ranch is Mountain Estate, covering approximately 650 acres (263 hectares) in the Mayacamas Mountains above Rutherford. Rutherford Estate, on the Rutherford Bench, encompasses approximately 90 acres (36 hectares), while Anderson Valley Estate in Mendocino County covers approximately 145 acres (59 hectares). These figures refer to the estates’ total areas, which include their vineyards.

Each property brings different conditions and opportunities to the family business. Alongside grape growing, Long Meadow Ranch produces olive oil, fruit and vegetables and raises livestock.

Vineyards at the Heart of the Ranch

Wine holds a central place at Long Meadow Ranch. The Napa Valley and Anderson Valley estates grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Winemaking remains part of a diversified agricultural operation that the family develops alongside its other growing and livestock activities.

Olive Groves and Estate-Milled Oil

Historic olive trees are among the ranch’s most distinctive features. The Prato Lungo groves, whose name is the Italian translation of Long Meadow, date back to the 1870s.

The family has its own Pieralisi olive mill at Mountain Estate. The nearby grove allows olives to reach the mill within minutes of harvest. Granite millstones gently crush the olives while the resulting paste is kept cool. Prompt processing and temperature control are important parts of maintaining the quality of the estate’s extra virgin olive oil.

Gardens, Orchards and Seasonal Cooking

The ranch grows more than 500 heirloom varieties of fruit and vegetables. Growers work with Farmstead’s chefs to select varieties for their flavour, suitability to local conditions and use throughout the year.

The harvest therefore directly influences the cooking. Gardens and orchards provide ingredients around which the restaurant can build its seasonal menu, while other produce reaches customers through the farmers’ market.

Animals as Part of the Farm

Long Meadow Ranch raises Scottish Highland cattle on its pastures. The cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished, and the herd is moved seasonally to fresh pasture.

At Rutherford Estate, chickens and honeybees are also part of the operation. The hens provide eggs, and their manure supplies nitrogen for the compost. Honeybees help pollinate fruit trees and gardens and produce the ranch’s own honey.

Compost: Returning to the Soil

At the end of the growing season, plant residues are composted with chicken manure. By spring, the compost is ready to fertilise the next season’s crops.

This connection illustrates Full Circle Farming in practice: work in one part of the ranch creates a resource for another, and each new growing season builds on the last.

Farmstead: Where It All Comes Together

Farmstead is the hospitality side of Long Meadow Ranch. It brings together a restaurant, wine-tasting spaces, an outdoor café, a farmers’ market and venues for special events. The historic Logan-Ives House, home to a general store and wine-tasting bar, is also part of the setting.

The restaurant celebrates American farmhouse cooking and the Hall family tradition of bringing ingredients fresh from their farms to a shared table. Here, Long Meadow Ranch wines meet the produce of the same farming operation. Full Circle Farming takes tangible form on the plate and in the glass
